A distressing emotion that causes physiological changes and ultimately behavioral changes. The fear response starts in a region of the brain called the amygdala. A threat stimulus triggers a fear response in the amygdala, which activates areas involved in preparation for motor functions involved in fight or flight. The amygdalae are two almond-shaped clusters of nuclei located deep inside each cerebral hemisphere, involved with the experiencing of emotions. With a fearful stimulus, information about that stimulus is immediately sent to the amygdala, which then send signals to areas of the brain like the hypothalamus to trigger a "fight-or-flight" response.
